Iced Agave 3-Way

Two things I always liked together: alcohol and coffee. Mainers know what I’m talking about, what with our state’s love of Allen’s Coffee Brandy, which can be combined with milk or cream to create a cocktail known as the “Maine Martini.” The Iced Agave 3-Way is an updated, classy version of the state classic.

The Agave 3-Way combines three different agave drinks: Patrón XO Cafe, a coffee liqueur made with Patrón Silver Tequila; Vespertino, a creamy tequila; and El Buho Mezcal, which I added to give the cocktail a rich smoky flavor to balance the sweet.

When I purchased the Mezcal, after seeking recommendations from the very knowledgeable Isaiah at Maine Beer and Beverage, he told me legend has it that lightning struck the agave plant to create this particularly smokey drink, which sounded perfect for what I wanted to do.

The real star is the Vespertino, a new offering from Stroudwater Distillery. It’s a tequila cream liqueur drink and it is something you will want to have in your liquor cabinet (this winter, I used it as a cream substitute in my hot cocoa as well). I don’t usually consume dairy, but I think my stomach will just have to be OK with it, just this once…

THE RECIPE

3 ounces Patrón XO Cafe
3 ounces Vespertino
1 ounce Mezcal

Add all of the above to a shaker with ice, shake vigorously and pour over ice into a rocks glass.
