They call the fitness craze Zumba a party – which would make Adriane Kramer its energetic hostess.
Through her business Girl Power Fitness in Lewiston – and other assorted classes in the area – the certified instructor and longtime dancer leads hundreds of students through lively routines based on myriad dance styles.
Zumba has changed her life, she says, and she stresses that true success comes when you find something you love to do.
How did you get involved, and how long have you been involved, with Zumba?
I’ve been doing it for more than four years. I had been teaching ballroom dancing and other fitness classes. After seeing Zumba, I was very intrigued, and it was probably the best thing that ever happened to me. Later I found out how challenging it is – you’re constantly having to learn new choreography, new songs. It’s never repetitive.
What fuels your passion?
I’ve been dancing since I was 2. I’m self-taught. I had done professional choreography in the past. With my passion for dance, it was a no-brainer. To do what I love to do, and to get paid for it, is probably the best dream that anybody could ask for. I love what I do, and it shows.
Who inspires you?
Probably my mother. She and my father both were dancers. I grew up with them dancing. They did swing, jitterbug – whatever the times were, that’s what they were doing.
What are your goals?
To have a facility large enough to be able to have more people per class. (Right now), I do back-to-back classes, and I can only fit about 30 to 40 people. (Her goal is 100 or more.) I would also like to be able to incorporate more family time. That’s the hardest part of this job.
What advice do you have for a woman taking up a fitness career?
I would definitely recommend researching whatever it is they want to go into. Ask as many questions as you can before you pursue that goal. If I had my way to do it all over again, I would only do Zumba. It’s helped me to grow. If you love what you do, it will show, if you’re just doing your job, it will show. Those are the best words of wisdom I could give to anybody doing anything in life, period.
