About Maine: New Year Rings in Fun Events

As we celebrated the new year’s arrival, another annual event crept in through our doors. That’s right: winter. For some this is exciting, as winter’s frigid temperature brings with it snow for new trails to blaze and frozen landscapes for fishing and skating. Meanwhile others are content to stay within the warmth of their homes with a holiday movie or a good book. Whatever side you fall on, here are some events to get you out and about to enjoy the winter spirit this new year! 

‘Ringing in the New Year’  

Richard Boyd Art Gallery, Portland

What better way to celebrate the new year than admiring beautiful art! Starting at 10:00 am, browse through unique paintings, bronze sculptures, and works of clay by talented artists such as Deena Ball, Heather Newton Brown, Patricia Chandler, Charles Ellithorpe, DVM, Richard Boyd, and more! ‘Ringing in the New Year’ will be featured every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from January 1st through January 30th!  


Collins Center for the Arts, Orono

The Collins Center for the Arts is hosting the MET: Live in HD’s performance of Cinderella, Saturday January 1st! This all new English rendition of ​​Massenet’s Cendrillon’s classic rags to riches princess story is brought to you live via high definition satellite streaming from the Metropolitan Opera in New York City. Don’t miss out on this talented cast including mezzo-soprano Isabel Leonard as Cinderella, mezzo-soprano Emily D’Angelo as Prince Charming, soprano Jessica Pratt as her Fairy Godmother, and mezzo-soprano Stephanie Blythe and bass-baritone Laurent Naouri as her feuding guardians.

For the first Friday of each month, the Portland visual art community opens its door to welcome in people of all ages to enjoy a variety of art created by artists both locally and abroad. Starting at 5:00 pm, people are able to casually stroll through different art galleries, art studios, museums, and alternative art venues scattered throughout the streets of Portland. This free event, supported by Creative Portland, is an endeavour to strengthen the arts community by providing easy-access to the visual arts in Portland and thus strengthening the community.

Stay in a festive winter spirit by soaking in the music and stories of Julie Lane and Fred Gosbee as they return to perform their Winter in New England! Enjoy the contemporary and colonial music of guitar, Celtic harp, fiddle and woodwind, along with stories and poems of a theme we know all too well : New England winters. Join them in person with a mask at the Camden Opera House, or within the comfort  of your own home via the Facebook live stream.

Warm up this winter by learning some new tips and tricks on how to make your favorite wintry drinks! The Burleigh Bar Cart, hosted at the Kennebunkport Inn bar over the months of January and February, is offering cocktail classes for only $25 per person. This price includes sample drinks and light snacks! Classes include for January include Jan 8+9: Whiskey & Rye, a Relationship on the Rocks, Jan 15+16: Spiked Coffee & Cocoa, Jan 22+23: But First, Tequila, and Jan 29+30: Hey There HOPS Stuff – Brews & Beers.  

County Snow Fest
